Pick a Movie
Privacy
Short version: No ads, no analytics, no tracking. To choose a pick, your device sends your pick settings to our server, which ranks titles and forgets them; nothing is stored or tied to you. If you choose to sign in, we store your email address and your Pick a Movie settings so they follow you to your other devices, and nothing else. You can delete the account at any time.
What stays on your device
To pick better each time, Pick a Movie remembers on your device the moods you choose, the titles it has shown you, the ones you saved, locked in, marked as seen or skipped, and your settings: languages, streaming services, Family mode and whether you said you're 18 or older. We never ask your age or date of birth. On the website this is kept in your browser's local storage. In the apps it is kept in the app's own storage. Clear your browser's site data, or uninstall the app, and it is gone.
If you import a viewing history or ratings file (Netflix, IMDb or another list), it is read on your device and never uploaded. Only the titles it matches are kept, as seen, liked or not your thing, like the ones you mark yourself.
How a pick is made
Picks are ranked on our server. Each time you ask for one, your device sends the question (mood, time, movie or series, New on streaming, Family mode), your country, languages and streaming services, and what it has learned of your taste: titles you saved, liked, locked in, skipped, marked as seen or not your thing, and a summary of the genres and themes you lean to. The server ranks titles with this, sends back a short list and keeps nothing: the request is not stored, logged by us or linked to you or an account. The apps also fetch a ranked list for each mood, which they keep on the phone for when you're offline.
If you sign in (optional)
Signing in is only for keeping your picks and settings in step across your devices. When you sign in with Google or with a code sent to your email, we store:
- Your account: your email address and, with Google, your name and profile picture link as Google shares them. We also keep when you signed up and last signed in.
- Your synced settings: your saved list, titles you marked as seen, liked, skipped or not your thing, your locked-in picks, your taste profile, your streaming services, languages, Family mode setting and your 18+ answer.
We don't store your password; there isn't one. We don't get your contacts, location or anything else from your Google account. We don't sell this data, share it with advertisers or use it for anything but syncing.
Accounts and synced settings are held by our database provider, Supabase, on servers in Mumbai, India, and are encrypted in transit. Sign-in emails are sent through Resend. On the website, the sign-in code is loaded from jsDelivr only when you sign in.
Delete your account from the profile icon at the top right → Account → Delete account, on the website or in the app. That removes your account and everything synced to it straight away. If you can't sign in any more, email us and we'll delete it within 30 days (how). Signing out, or deleting the account, leaves the copy on your device in place until you clear it.
Your country
We show what streams in your country. The website and apps work this out on your device from your device's time zone and language settings. We do not look up your location from your IP address or ask for it. The country code (for example "in" or "us") goes to our server with each pick, as described above, and nowhere else.
What your device connects to
To work, the website and apps download files from a few places. Like any website, these services receive your IP address and basic device information as part of the connection. We do not receive or see that information.
- Our site and server, hosted on Cloudflare: the movie catalogue, streaming lists and the ranking described above. The apps download these too and keep a copy for offline use. Cloudflare handles the connection and may keep short-lived technical logs for security. Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- TMDB (image.tmdb.org): movie posters and backdrops. TMDB's privacy policy.
- Google Fonts: the website's typeface. The apps include the fonts and do not make this connection. Google Fonts privacy.
- YouTube, only when you play a trailer. It uses the privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). Google's privacy policy.
- Streaming services, only when you tap Watch. That opens the service's website or app, and its own privacy policy applies from there.
Sharing
When you share a pick, your device's share sheet sends a link to that title to the app or person you choose. We are not involved.
Children
Pick a Movie is not directed at children under 13, and accounts are not intended for them. The catalogue includes films for adults. Family mode hides titles that are not suitable for a family audience.
Changes
If we change what we store, we will update this page, and the app store privacy labels, before the change ships.
